Summary

This ancient series is about love and beauty. Anne and Marianne are sworn sisters and are best friends. They live in Mei Yen Chuen or the Beautiful People Village. Ironically, both girls are ugly and are ridiculed for their appearances. Marianne has a big red birthmark and a large mole on the left side of her face. Anne has marks all over her face. In actuality, Anne is very beautiful. When she was young, her father got really sick and Anne prayed to relieve him. Anne promised to stay sick and ugly as long as her father was well again. Although both are ugly, they have very different personalities. Anne is kind and honest. She is also very good as a smith. On the other hand, Marianne is a troublemaker and is deceitful. Anne is the only friend Marianne has. By chance, the emperor is traveling in the village and is ambushed by his evil uncle, who is plotting to take the throne. Anne rescues him and hides him. As a promise, the emperor played by Eddie Cheung, promises to marry the ugly Anne. Annes father reveals Annes true beauty. Eddie is stunned but gets taken off by his bodyguard to the palace. Meanwhile, Marianne feels betrayed because Anne is beautiful. One day, Marianne sees a magician, Marco Ngai, performing tricks, which changes peoples face into beautiful faces. Marco does a trick on Marianne and magically she changes to a very beautiful girl. The beautiful girl is Charmaine Sheh. Marianne begs Marco to do his trick permanently but Marco says that Marianne needs someone with the same features. Meanwhile, Eddie sends word that he will marry Anne and sends for her. Marianne gets in trouble with the law by killing a man she owes. Marco tells Marianne that Anne is a perfect candidate. Hesitantly, Marianne drugs Anne on the night before Anne leaves for the palace. Marco performs is magic and the two faces gets switched. Now, Marianne is Anne and Anne is Marianne. The evil Anne arrives at the palace and Eddie spends all his time with her. Marianne tries to get to the palace to find Eddie. Along the way she meets Evergreen Mak, a con artist. At first Evergreen was going to turn Marianne for a reward but learns to enjoy her presence. He promises to take her to Eddie for money. On their way, evil Anne stabs Marianne and Evergreen takes her to an inn. Meanwhile, Marianne's father discovers the truth and tries to tell Eddie but is poison by Anne. Eddie becomes suspicious and travels to the town Marianne is at. He sees her at night while someone was trying to kill her. After a very complicated plan, the truth is revealed. Eddie forces Marco to restore the face but Marco cant. Anne is imprisoned. Marianne was about to leave the palace because Eddie is in love with beauty, but Eddie forces himself to fall on his knees to beg for Mariannes hand. Marianne is made empress. Marianne teaches Eddie how to become a better emperor and also wins the heart of the people and Eddie's mother. Eddie's uncle forces Eddie to go to war hoping he would die. Marianne goes with Eddie and the morale of the army goes up. Eddie returns to the palace while Marianne fights in the war. At home, he sees Anne and falls in love. Supposedly Anne was killed by the orders of Eddie's mother but Eddies uncle rescues her. He gives her a new identity, Si Si. Soon Marianne returns home to find that Anne is Eddie's concubine. Marianne treats Anne as a sister regardless and soon both are pregnant. Marianne has a fair and beautiful boy and Anne has a dark-skin and ugly boy. Anne switches the baby. Marianne tries to tell Eddie but Eddie blames Marianne because the baby looked like her. Soon Anne tricks Eddie into believing that someone else fathered Marianne's baby. Eddie tries to kill the baby but Marianne's begs for its life making Eddie sure that the baby is Marianne's. The Empress Dowager releases Marianne and the baby from prison. Marianne is caught but the baby is left in the forest. Marianne is beheaded and Eddie regrets it too late. Heaven decides to give Marianne another chance and Marianne raises Anne's baby for 18 years. At first the baby is just like Anne but with Marianne's love, he changes. Meanwhile, Eddie feels so guilty that he leaves the palace to be run by his uncle and Anne. The people are taxed heavily and there are many poor people. Marianne's real son is taught to be evil by Anne and becomes a spoiled and evil prince. Marianne takes Anne's son to the capital to take the examinations and meet her real son. She spanks him for being evil. They stay at an inn and meet Evergreen and her father. Meanwhile, Marco and Anne dispose of the uncle. Marco decides to exchange his face with Eddie to become king. Marianne finds out and rescues Eddie. Eddie sends word to receive Marianne and Anne's son to the palace. Anne and Marco kill the Dowager Empress. Eddie decides to crown Anne's son crown prince since he is kind and intelligent. Anne tells Mariannes son to assassinate the crown prince but she takes the knife. Marianne's son is imprisoned. He escapes and Marianne decides to leave with him. He causes trouble in town and his caught. Marianne drinks the poison for him and he learns to love her. In the palace, Eddie is poisoned and Anne reveals her identity as the mother to the crown prince. Marianne wakes up to find it wasnt poison but a plan to show her love for her son. Soon they set out to the palace and with the help of the crown prince, Annes and Marco's plans are destroyed. Finally, Eddie realizes his love for Marianne. Annes son becomes the crown prince. On the night of celebrating, Marianne's 18-year time limit is up. Heaven smiles on Marianne and makes her beautiful by removing the birthmark and decide to let Marianne remain on earth. Everyone lives happily ever after.
